What the Bible teaches us about communication

Listening and Doing (James 1:19-27)

19My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

26Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Do not interrupt the other person when you are talking to him or her.

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

Think twice before speaking (Proverb 29:20)

20 Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them.

Speak truthfully and in love (Colossians 3:9)

9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices

Do not raise your voice when you are presenting your argument. (Romans 13:13)

13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

Be gentle and kind when you are responding to the person (Ephesians 4:26)

26“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

Do not respond in kind to someone ‘s criticisms (1Peter 2:23)

23When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. (1Peter 2:23)

Do not be critical or judgmental but encourage the person to build him or her up (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

If you give up the fellowship of your brethren and sistren because it’s too ship do not distance yourself from other people’s company. Instead, use the wisdom of the scripture to learn the principles of the creation in pursuit of happiness. Learn to enjoy the companionship of those who share the same goals as you and learn to experience the kingdom of God in the company of the saints. Amen!
