Watching seeds germinate is great activity for kids particularly when the seeds develop quickly. Alfalfa ( Medicago sativa) is a very easy to cultivate seed that will sprout in around a week. To watch the seeds germinate, sprinkle a few alfalfa seeds over a piece of wet paper towel.
What you'll need:
Alfalfa seeds are in a package (about 1.5g)
A small plate or saucer
3 pieces of paper towel
A spray mister or small water container
How to grow:
Make sure to wet three pieces of paper towel and put them on top of one another flat on a platter.
After that, you should drain the water off the plate. The paper towel should be wet however the seeds must not be floating in the water.
Spread the seeds evenly onto the towel.
Put the paper towel on a sunny window and add water to prevent the towel from drying. You can use a mister or spray bottle to dampen the seeds or gently add a small quantity of water into the saucer by using either a small cup or jug.
Every day, check your seeds to determine how they are growing.
Troubleshooting
Alfalfa seed is easy to grow and should germinate within 2-6 days. If the seeds don't germinate in this time There are a few things that might have gone wrong:
Too dry. Seeds require water to develop. Alfalfa seeds absorb about their own weight in water before they germinate, and بذور حشيشة السودان look larger. Seeds that are not moist enough are not able to sprout. Add more water to the plate to make sure that the seeds are damp but not floating. You can also soak the seeds over night; but ensure that you drain and rinse them with fresh water prior to spreading them on the paper towel.
Too moist: Seeds that are too wet may cause their roots and shoots to turn brown before they develop. Also, it is possible that mould can begin to develop around the seeds. Although it's fine to allow the paper towel and بذور حشيشة السودان seeds to be damp but they shouldn't submerge in water. Drain excess water from the dish each time you mist or water the seeds.
Too cold or hot: The best temperature for alfalfa to grow is 20-25 degrees Celsius. If you're planting your seeds indoors in winter, place them in a cool area. If you're growing your seeds in very warm temperatures, you may have to water them more often as they will dry out quicker.
