A frantic underwater rescue effort is underway after a tractor-trailer went off the Delaware Memorial Bridge and into the river Friday morning.

The single tractor-truck, without a trailer, ran off the bridge as it traveled southbound and plunged into the water at around 3.40am, according to Wilmington officials.

It reportedly crossed three lanes of traffic before it crashed onto a concrete pad and through a concrete wall, falling into the Delaware River.

The semi cab was located in about 20 feet of water at around 10am EST.

Officials have not revealed any information about the driver or their condition. 

It's not clear if anyone else was in the truck when it smashed through the barrier and plunged into the river. 

Police said they have video evidence of the moment the vehicle went into the river, but are yet to share it.

US Coast Guard air and marine units, fire companies and dive teams are participating in the search.

More than 100,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day. 

The truck that went off the bridge is a Bobtail Tractor but had no trailer attached. 

The Delaware River and Bay Authority said this is the first incident of its kind on the iconic bridge. 

The crash happened near a structurally critical section of the bridge, but it appears that it caused no structural damage.
