Another Great Spinach For Our Summers -- Egyptian Spinach

Corchorus Olitorius Egyptian Spinach is a well-loved seasonally-grown vegetable in our area. It goes under many names Molokhia/Molokheiya (and several other ways to spell it), أفضل انواع بذور البرسيم salad mallow, Jew's mallow mallow and West African sorrel to name just a few. It is believed that it been a staple food in Egypt well before the time of Christ and was a staple food there from the time of the Pharaohs. Molokheiya which is an Egyptian term that means "vegetable for kings", is the Egyptian term used to describe the soup. Wikipedia claims that an ill Egyptian King around 6000BC demanded hot soup and was cured by drinking hot soup regularly. Cleopatra might also have enjoyed the same soup. Egyptian Spinach and its numerous close connections are prevalent throughout Africa as well as the Middle East, India and many parts of Asia. It can be found in all tropical and subtropical regions around the globe.



It is an annual, grows to about a metre tall and produces small yellow flowers and produces edible seed pods, and edible leaves that are easily harvested. It is extremely tough and grows quickly. Similar to Okra, many of the same conditions for growth are present. It loves the heat, can handle both dry and wet conditions (not the waterlogged) however it doesn't appreciate the shade.

The younger leaves can be eaten raw in salads, or on sandwiches and the older leaves dried or cooked. Take leaves like spinach. In Egypt the leaves are utilized in traditional soups made with garlic, coriander and meat. In other parts of the world it is made into a stew that includes rice, cassava, and chicken meat. There are a variety of recipes for this plant. Leaves can be dried , then powdered and used as a tea, kept for later use in stews and soups, for additional flavor and to thicken the dish . In Japan it is advertised in the health food store as a health tea. Young seed pods are utilized in the same manner as okra.



The advantages of Egyptian spinach have been promoted since the time of Pharaohs. As a tea , it is said to enhance your immune system. It can also help treat constipation, cancer, anaemia, cystitis, diabetes, fatigue excessive blood pressure menopausal symptoms, high cholesterol and respiratory issues, as well as obesity and water retention. Tea made of leaves can help during pregnancy and help increase mother's milk production. It can be used to treat sore eyes or rashes as well as cuts, bruises and cuts.
