Children love watching seeds germinate. This is especially true when seeds germinate quickly. Alfalfa ( Medicago sativa) is a very easy to cultivate seed which should begin to sprout within a week. Sprinkle a small quantity of alfalfa seeds on a wet paper towel to observe their seeds sprout and grow.
You'll Need:
a packet of alfalfa seeds (about 1.5g)
A small saucer or plate
Three pieces of paper towel
A small spray mister or water jug
How to grow
Place 3 sheets of paper towel on a dish.
Then, drain the water out of the plate. The paper towel must be damp but the seeds shouldn't be floating in water.
Place the seeds in a uniform manner on the towel.
Place on a sunny windowsill and add water to prevent the towel from drying. You can use spray bottles or misters to moisten the seeds or add a tiny quantity of water into the saucer using an ice cube or a small cup.
Check your seeds every day to see how they're developing.

Too moistIf the seeds are too moist, their new shoots and roots could become rotten before they get a chance to grow. The seeds may also become moldy. It's okay for the paper towel to be wet but the seeds should not be floating in water. Each time you mist or water seeds, remove the excess water.
Too cold or hot Alfalfa grows best in temperatures between 20 and 25°C. If you're growing your seed indoors in winter, set them in a cool area. You may need to water your seeds more frequently if you grow them in extremely warm temperatures. They will dry out faster.
