2:1-12 [Mark 2:1-12New International Version (NIV)]
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man
2 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Manhas authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

A mother sent her son to the army and visited him for the first time. Even though there were many soldiers waiting for their visitors, the mother was able to find her son in the crowd immediately. This is the mysterious power of love.
As soon as the son entered the visitation room, the mother greeted him by a simple phrase, “my son” and padded him on his back. The son smiled from ear to ear and told her he was well. However, after a while, he confessed that he had been miserable as a superior was forcing him to wake up in the early morning and run the field and then report back to him before having breakfast. In most cases, the breakfast serving time was over by the time he finished running and reporting back to the superior.
After hearing her son, all the strength left the mother’s body but she was wise and said, “Son, the superior must think that the youth of today have it much easier than when he was a private so run with more energy and enthusiasm. Don’t run with complaint in your mind but with happiness and singing run the field. And after running, go to the superior and thank him for paying special attention to you. She told him to remember that God changes all things for the good in us.

From that day forward, after attending early morning prayer, at about the time her son would wake up and run the field, she too went to the track and ran. After a month, she received a letter from her son. It was labeled, “To my mom, that I love the most in the whole wide world”.
As she read the letter, she cried for joy as her son shared the events of the past month. He told her that when he was running the field, there were times of frustration and anger and humiliation to the point that he was going to confront the superior and rebel. However, as he prepared for the full dress pack run, he cried as he no longer was weighed down by his asthma. The early morning running had cured him of his breathing problems. He was so grateful that he went to the superior and said thank you and the superior was in such shock that he told him that he didn’t have to run and report to him any longer. However, he decided now he would continue to run for himself. He shouted Hallelujah with joy to his mother.
How can we work together to do good?

Romans 8:28New International Version (NIV)
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.
When God talks about those he loves, he is talking about us, who have become Christians and his children. The people of this world chase after their worldly desires but Christians need to be guided by the Holy Spirit and restrain ourselves from the temptations of this world.
Restraining our desires and living in accordance with God’s law is very difficult. Sometimes, it will draw the ridicule and laughter of others but we must stand firm and keep to God’s commands and the reward will be the overflowing abundant blessing and gift of eternal life from our Father.

Jesus saw the extent to which the people went to bring the paralyzed man to Jesus and thus forgave him of his sins and consequently the healing of his paralysis.
It is not important where and who’s house this is. The important point is that the spread of the miracles and news of Jesus shows that the light will overcome darkness. And wherever he is, there was the miracle of life. The scripture today shows the healing of a paralyzed man by the faith of those who brought him. We are like this paralyzed man and the act of him being brought to Jesus is the sharing of the gospel in the present day.

Our reality

Four men carried a paralyzed man to see Jesus. By this time, people had already heard of the miracles Jesus had performed and were eager to see him now that he had returned to Capernaum.
The paralyzed man
The reality for human beings is that we are not perfect. Sin causes suffering and illness for human beings but through Jesus Christ, we can receive forgiveness of our sins and thus alleviation from our sufferings and illness.
They carried this paralyzed man to Jesus.
The ones that brought the paralyzed man to Jesus knew of his power. While most people turned their back to this paralyzed man, these people that brought the man did not abandon him. They knew who Jesus was and what he was capable of. A sick person cannot do anything by themselves. A sick person needs the help of others. This holds true for those who are “spiritually” paralyzed. They too need the help of others to bring them to Jesus Christ.

Our duty

Verse 4 tells us that the crowd prevented them from bringing him to Jesus so they made a hole in the roof and lowered him to Jesus.
They made a hole in the roof
This is like our spiritual journey.
This is like our spiritual journey. There are many difficulties that we will face as we strive to become close with Jesus. This journey is not easy but it is THE path to salvation.

Our salvation

Verse 5 says that Jesus saw their faith and told the paralyzed man his sins are forgiven.

They lowered him to Jesus
The people that brought the paralyzed man to Jesus didn’t care about looking foolish or ashamed. The only goal they had was to bring this man to Jesus.  Jesus is pleased with us when we put our full effort and focus to meet Jesus Christ.

Jesus saw their faith
We must have the same faith as these people had. We shouldn’t look to do God’s work in a calculating way because God makes something impossible possible. He creates something from nothing. He wants to see this faith in each of us.

He said, “Son, your sins are forgiven”
The only path to Jesus is by faith. He saw their faith and gave them the most fundamental gift; the forgiveness of his sins. Whenever Jesus healed somebody, he always told them that their faith has saved them and their faith has forgiven their sins. He is teaching us that spiritual health has a direct correlation with physical health.

The faith of those who brought the paralyzed man
Who is the main character of this story? It is not the paralyzed man but rather those who brought the paralyzed man to Jesus. It was by their faith that the paralyzed man was healed and received forgiveness of his sins. What was in their hearts that such a miserable life could have changed to a blessed life?

– It was a combined faith
The four who carried the man had one purpose. If even one of those in the group didn’t agree, the man would not have made it Jesus. We need to learn cooperation through this story. No matter how strong an individual’s faith is, if that person cannot work together with this neighbor, that person’s faith will not be of help to the church. Even those with little faith, if combined, have one goal and focus, then they can do great things within the church.

– It was a faith that healed a handicap
These people brought the paralyzed man to Jesus but due to the large crowd they could not reach him. But they didn’t give up. They went up to the roof, made a hole and lowered his mat to Jesus. We also need this type of faith. The path we walk in faith can be one in which we are burdened like a handicap. However, we must not despair and instead we must maintain a positive and proactive attitude so that we can overcome any handicap or challenge.

They had faith that as long as they brought him to Jesus, he would be healed.
Why would these people go through such difficult actions which could have potentially got them in trouble such as making a hole in somebody’s roof? It was because they wholeheartedly believed that as long as they brought the paralyzed man to Jesus, he would be healed. They made up their minds and put all their strength together and had faith in this truth.
My loving brothers and sisters!
오직 주님만 의탁하고 끝까지 믿음으로 기다립시다(약1:6-8) We also must achieve this kind of faith. The only one that can resolve any and all problems/challenges we may have is Jesus. Thus we must steadfastly hold on to him, entrust ourselves to him, believe in him and have faith in his abilities (Mark 15:27). There is no other path…only Jesus Christ, our Lord. Let’s have faith in him.
