Restore the excitement of the Gospel!

Romans 1:16-17New International Version (NIV)
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[a] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[b]

(1) Paul stated that he was selected for the gospel.
그리고 그는 복음을 위하여 자신의 생명까지도 귀하게 여기지 않고 온전히 헌신하려 했습니다.(행20:24)심지어 복음을 전하지 않으면 자기에게 화가 미치리라 고백했습니다.(고전9:16) Paul was more than willing to lay down his life for the gospel. It was to the point that he confessed he was filled with anger and frustration when he was unable to share the gospel.

– What is the Gospel?
The Gospel is the good news. If you hear it, it gives you joy and if you allow it to be sewn into your heart, it will sprout as life. The Gospel gives life to the dying. This precious Gospel has been given to us by God. Why? Because he is love and he loves us. He loves us to the point of sending His one and only Son to this world, not as a King per his birthright by the lineage of David, but as a man. And in this form, he sacrificed his life and sinless blood to be a sacrifice for our sins, once and for all. Thereafter, he was raised from death and stayed with his disciples for 40 days in which he resided and taught his disciples the following:
Acts 1:7-8New International Version (NIV)
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Then, after this period, he ascended (lifted up) to Heaven as they watched.

– What was this Gospel that Paul was not ashamed of?
The foundation of the Gospel is the cross of Jesus Christ. This is a difficult point for Jews because it represents God’s judgement and for the gentiles, it represents their lacking faith.

         – It is the only thing that has the power to save us
As it says in verse 16, “…it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes…” Jesus spoke these exact words in John 14:6 and to Peter specifically in Acts 4:12. Do you believe that the Gospel: Jesus Christ is the only path to salvation? Amen!
The apostle Paul had the devout faith in the truth that in Christ, ALL would gain life (1 Corinthians 15:22). With such conviction in this truth, there was no room shame nor doubt. We too much first attain the conviction in the truth that God has the power to give us salvation. Once we have this conviction, we will no longer be ashamed of our faith.

         – It makes the faithful righteous
The Gospel makes all who believe righteous (Romans 3:22). Of course, this is a consequence of the fact that the Gospel has the power to save us.
The belief that the Gospel has the power to salvation is different from other beliefs or schools of thought because we believe that it is the only way to salvation and the method in which we can become righteous.
This method is clearly explained in the scripture in which Jesus Christ died on the cross and by his blood, gave us remission of our sins. Thus, as we have been cleansed of our sins, we have been made righteous.
This is exactly why Paul was not ashamed of the Gospel because of the pain, hurt, ridicule, death that Jesus Christ went through in order that we may be made righteous.
Then shouldn’t we, who have received this as a gift, also not be ashamed of the Gospel?

         – It gives salvation to ALL who believe
Paul shouted out that he was not ashamed of the Gospel to ALL who were gathered in Rome; both Jews and Gentiles. This was because he knew that the Gospel had the power to give salvation to ALL who believed in Jesus Christ. The Gospel does not discriminate. To whoever calls upon the name of Jesus Christ will be saved. (Romans 10:13). Thus, we must not be ashamed of the Gospel but rather we must be more confident and proactive in sharing the Gospel with everyone.

   – What is this excitement?
When the disciples obeyed Jesus’ command and prayed, the Holy Spirit came upon them like tongues of fire. Once they were filled with the Holy Spirit, they became confident in their faith and it was with this confidence that Peter told the crowd that were gathered that the Jesus Christ they had killed is now our Savior. He shared the Gospel. He didn’t fear death. With this powerful message, many were baptized and the church grew more and more every day to form the first church of Christ in Jerusalem. People heard from the Apostles, shared in fellowship and communion. They prayed together and praised God (Acts 2:38-47). Their excitement of the Gospel was made evident.
Until he met Christ Jesus on his way to Damascus, Paul persecuted those who believed in Jesus Christ with fervor. Once he realized how naive he was prior to his “eyes” being opened, he confidently shared the Gospel with ALL people everywhere he went to fulfill the word of Christ that he has been chosen to share the name of Christ Jesus to Gentiles, kings, Jews alike.

         – Certainty that comes when you receive the Gospel
Paul was willing to drop everything; his citizenship to Rome, his education, and give up everything for Christ Jesus because what the Lord provided was more precious than anything he attained in this world.

         – The action that follows when you receive the Gospel
Paul went on three different missionary trips where he performed miracles, shared the Gospel and established churches for the glory of God.

         – The reality of delivering the Gospel
그 결과   하나님의 인도하심이 있어 간수가 바울을 통해 세례를 받고 저와 온 집안이 하나님을 믿었으므로 크게 기뻐했습니다.(행 16:19-34) While Paul and Silas were delivering the Gospel, they were beaten and thrown into the dungeon/jail. However, even there, they praised God and subsequently was able to share the Gospel with the jail keeper and bring salvation to his entire family.

    – In order to regain the excitement of the Gospel, follow Paul’s example
     (1 Corinthians 11:1)
Paul was chosen because of this special excitement/fervor. How can we be sure?
16:10) – Paul obeyed when he was called to be a messenger of the Gospel
20:23,24) – Paul didn’t fear any circumstance that befell him as he delivered the Gospel
         – Paul considered it an honor to face the suffering of delivering the Gospel
         – In all circumstance, Paul was never ashamed of the Gospel
         – Paul went wherever the Gospel was needed
         – He prioritized the Gospel above all else and invested all his energy for
           the Gospel
         – When he was incapacitated such as being in jail, he sent letters of
          support of the Gospel
          – He considered it a sin to not share the Gospel
          – He faced all suffering and did whatever was necessary within this
            abilities to share the Gospel
           – He was willing to give his life for the Gospel

– Today’s Lesson
Romans 16:25New International Version (NIV)
25 Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past
The Gospel was hidden from all of us for a very long time. God allowed the revealing of this truth of Jesus Christ as the Savior to all of us who were sinners. We must now cherish and be joyful of this eternal gift of the Gospel that has been given to us. With this gratitude we must now utilize our lives to prioritize the sharing of the Gospel without shame.
In this pursuit, God has given us our health and wisdom in abundance. With this, we now know our goal and purpose in life. How can we not be excited about the Gospel that has given us this clarity of our existence. Though obstacles may befall us, with confidence in this truth, we willingly submit our lives as solders for our Father God and glorify Him with our sharing of the Gospel.
