What is blocking your spiritual growth?

1 Corinthians 3:1-9 (NIV)

The Church and Its Leaders
3 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings?
5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task.6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9 For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.

Whether we have been believers for a long time or have just found our faith, we all desire to grow and mature in faith. However, does our faith truly grow in this way? The honest truth is that it usually does not. In today’s scripture, the church in Corinth received the word of Jesus Christ but failed to grow and mature in their faith. What could be the reason that Paul criticized this church to the point of calling them “those bound to the flesh”? Let’s find out what was blocking the spiritual growth of the church in Corinth so that we can find out what could potentially block our spiritual growth.

Worldly/Secular character’s foolishness

There are two types of Christians in the church. The spiritual Christian and the Christian that is obsessed with carnal/fleshly desires.
Galatians 5:25-26 (ESV)
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

The church in Galatia and those that made up the church could not lay down completely their carnal/fleshly desires and thus fell prey to disputes and jealousy and this blocked their spiritual growth in faith.
Those Christians who are of the flesh have jealousy towards other believers and in argument are unwilling to give in. In a church, this type of believers are bound to exist and thus we must get over the fantasy that all believers are holy and completely changed if we want to prevent stumbling in our own walk in faith.
This type of believer also creates disputes instead of creating peace and harmony.
그것은 우리의 마음속에 남아있던 세속적인 생각이 어느 순간에 튀어나와 자신을 삼키고, 교회의 귀한 사역까지도 망치게 하는 것입니다.(행5:1-3) We must be wary of our old selves and habits coming forth and disrupting our growth and the growth of the church as a whole.

My loving brothers and sisters, let us cast aside our worldly/secular characteristics and allow the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts.

주님을 믿는 제자의 길은 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 예수를 좇는 것입니다.(막8:34)  자기 목숨도 주님과 복음 전파를 위해서 바칩니다(막8:35) Paul likened those bound to the flesh as those that cannot be fed. The path to discipleship and faith in Christ is to set aside our selfish and self-centeredness and picking up our cross and following our Lord Jesus Christ, sacrificing our lives in order to witness the gospel.

Pride that denied our acknowledgement of the authority of God.

Paul made it clear that it is not about being a part of Paul’s group or Apollo’s group but rather it is only God who makes things grow.
We are reminded that we are but a servant to facilitate the process of growth; whether we water or plant the seed, but the one that makes things grow is only God.
We can only face failure in our faith’s growth if we forget this truth and rely on our own lacking strengths and abilities.
If we sincerely want to have spiritual growth, we must cast aside our pride which wants to put our will first, as well as our reliance on people and instead humbly entrust ourselves fully to our Father God who perfects our faith.

Not knowing the variety in which spiritual gifts are given

Paul points out the futility in the divisive arguments of the church of Corinth. Instead he points to the fact that they are all doing the same works, in different capacities.
We, each with our own talents must put forth our full effort to contribute to the ultimate manifestation of God’s works. Simply put, do your best with what God has given you. Helping one another as we each have different talents. Without this realization and acknowledgement, we will not be able to grow spiritually.

1 Corinthians 12:4-12 (NIV)
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b]11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
Unity and Diversity in the Body
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.

The church will surely grow and prosper if we are able to lay down our jealousy an disputes and work together, contributing with the talents we have been given.

Who is the Christian that is bound to the flesh

In the last part of Chapter 3 in 1 Corinthians, Paul clarifies that only those who are of the spirit can recognize the works of the Holy Spirit. This comparison is not between those who believe and those who do not believe but rather this is a comparison between those believers who are of the spirit and those who are of the flesh. The Christian who is of the flesh is like a newborn, still lacking in faith and instruction.
This is why we are told to feed in accordance with one’s spiritual stage and thus as ministers, we must teach and guide those new believers in ways that is easy to understand. Teachers of Christ are God’s servants and not leaders of a religious sect. A minister is a servant of God and is entrusted with a commission from God and thus those ministers will be rewarded by God for their efforts.

This is because conflicts in the church.

We must know that the church’s foundation was established by the grace of God

The foundation of the church is Jesus Christ..

There is no other that can establish this foundation. The church was purchased and established by the blood of Jesus Christ (Acts 20:28, Revelation 5:9) The church is Jesus Christ, the son of the living God, incarnate. This is why Jesus said that he is the head of the church and the corner stone of the church. .(psalm 118:22; Mt 21:42). Paul witnessed that Jesus is the head of the church (Ephesians 5:23, Colossians 1:18) We must then acknowledge that anyone that is part of the body of Christ must only follow the instructions and commands of the head of the church who is Jesus Christ.

Application

Do you want to grow in your faith? If so, then discard the worldly character that are embedded deep into your body, mind and soul.

Do not let even a little bit of the worldly/secular character remain in you. Because if you let it remain, when you least expect it, it will bring forth jealousy and disputes that will block your spiritual growth.

Lay down your pride and ego and acknowledge that God is the only source for spiritual growth.
