God will use you according to your unique personality and talents

“30So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. 31The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. 32Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace to return to those who had sent them. 34But Silas decided to remain there. 35But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord.

Disagreement Between Paul and Barnabas

36Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.” 37Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, 38but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord. 41He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches. (Acts 15:30-41)

Barnabas and Paul had a sharp disagreement and parted company.

39They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus”(Acts15:39)

“10나와 함께 갇힌 아리스다고와 바나바의 생질 마가와 ( 마가에 대하여 너희가 명을 받았으매 그가 이르거든 영접하라)  (골로새서 4:10) “10My fellow prisoner Aristarchus sends you his greetings, as does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas. (You have received instructions about him; if he comes to you, welcome him.) (Colossians 4:10)

Paul, Barnabas, Mark personality and activities.

Paul was more focused on the work more than the people.

Paul love the people more than anyone else.

(15:36) 36Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.”(Acts 15:36)

38but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work.(Acts 15:38)

We need to try to be more understanding of those people that are focused on work and acknowledge their motivation.

Those that are focused on work must also put sincere effort to care and love their neighbors.

(1:24) 24And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers. (Philemons 1:24)

Barnabas was more focused on the people than the work.

.Barnabas loved those around him.

(4:36,37) 36Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.(Acts 4:36,37)

He always put people before anything else

26When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. 27But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. 28So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.(Acts 9:26-28)

He was kind and filled with the Holy Spirit and faithful.

(11:24-26) 24He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.25Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.(Acts 11:24-26)

Even in disagreement he did not abandon Mark.

39They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord(Acts 15:39)

We cannot judge who was right and wrong between Paul and Barnabas.

Being focused on the people has its pros and cons.

On the contrary, people-oriented people often cannot be upright because of their generosity.

5so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it(Romans 12:5-8)

Mark overcame his mistakes.

51A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.(Mark 14:51,52)

)During the 1st missionary trip, Mark quit midway and left the group.

13From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem.(Acts 13:13)

This was the reason Paul did not want to take him on the trip.

38but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. (Acts 15:38)

However, even with this failure in his spiritual walk, he did not give up on his calling nor his life. He did not hide from his failures or shortcomings. Instead, Mark continued to work in faith and eventually became a great worker for God

11Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry

(2Timothy 4:11)

13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.

(1Peter 5”13)

Although Mark is not one of the 12 disciples, his book is one of the books of the bible, Mark.

Today’s Lesson.

We too must not give up on our spiritual fight and walk because of failures in this world. God does not use us for his will because we are perfect or strong or great.

7우리가 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니 이는 능력의 심히 것이 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라(고후4:7) 7But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.(2 Corinthians 4:7) 9But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me (2Corinthians 12:9)

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

When we are able to realize this truth and give thanks, God will impart to us his great power.
