What must we prepare to be ready for the coming of our Lord?
5:7-9 James
James 5:7-9New International Version (NIV)
Patience in Suffering
7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

Unlike a sprinter, a marathon runner is not anxious nor impatient. Marathon runners control their breathing, is patient and controls his strength for the full stretch of the race so that he can reach the final finish line.
From time to time, we meet roads that are an uphill battle. We also run into storms and pitfalls, and injuries. However, we must persevere to the end and run the full race and finish the task at hand. In this pursuit, even believers will be faced with temptation from Satan. But James tells us that we must try our best with all of our abilities until the final moment of entering into the kingdom of Heaven.
If we are committed to this mission, how must we organize our daily lives to accomplish this mission?

Until the Return of our Lord
What is advent (the arrival of a notable event/person)?

Jesus Christ came to this world in human form, took upon himself our sins, and died on the cross. And in accordance with the scriptures, he rose up from dead after three days and showed himself to his disciples and in front of them ascended into heaven. Thus he became the first fruit of resurrection and now is at the right hand of our Father God.

– The return of our Lord is called the Second Coming
           – He first came to this world as it states in John 3:16, to save us
22:12, 20;) – The second coming will be to judge the world

       – The purpose of advent

First, this is the moment when all believers, both death and alive come together and are changed into glorious living beings. For those who believe in the Lord, they will receive the ultimate gift from our Lord.

Second, it will be a day of judgment for those that did not believe and for
Satan. God’s righteousness and peace will rule on that day.

What must we prepare to be ready for the coming of our Lord?

As the scriptures state, the believers had fervor but as time passed and Jesus did not return in their lifetime, brothers and sisters began to lose their faith and argued with one another. This is the reason for verse 9 and James’ exhortation to be patient and not grumble with one another as they will be judged.
The best example of patience is that of a farmer.

Farmers sow their seeds and wait patiently for the crop to grow and bear
fruit and its respective yield. We need to learn the type of patience farmers
have for the yielding of their crops

We are told in the scriptures to have patience.

a)주의 강림하시기까지 – Until  his coming

This represents the final day in which Christ will return with all glory.

– Continue to be patient

Even in circumstances that cause us to be stirred up and angry, we must remember to be patient and replace that emotion with love that Christ showed to us.

(8) – Stand firm

To not waiver once we have made a decision to stand firm. What is this commitment that James is referring to? It is to place the return of Christ deep in our hearts and to have complete faith in that truth.

a)고난을 자원하므로 배우라 – Learn to welcome suffering

We all know that there will be suffering and hardship in our lives. However, as believers, we do not run or be afraid of those inevitable sufferings and hardships.

– We must learn from our suffering

If we do not have the perseverance, we will fall to our suffering at one point or another.
We must learn to have this long suffering perseverance.

Do not grumble against one another

From the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, they grumbled against Moses who led them out for 40 years as they wandered in the wilderness. What was the result of that grumbling? Except for Joshua and Caleb, 603550 counted males (much higher number if you count all Israelites), all died in the wilderness.

We must learn perseverance from Job.
The lesson through Job’s perseverance through all of his suffering and hardship is a special and important lesson from God.
(42:12-17) In one moment, Job lost everything; his family, children, wealth, health. All those friends that came to comfort him only ended up distracting and bothering him. Job suffered extremely and yet even in his suffering, he did not turn his back to nor grumble against God and maintained his hope in God. He continued to seek God. God eventually answered Job and Job was blessed for his perseverance.

Application

We must have patience and persevere until the coming of our Lord

We must stand firm in Christ. God is the farmer and Jesus Christ is the vine. We are the grape branches. If we are fruitful, God is glorified and we become disciples of Christ Jesus.

We must not grumble against one another and instead love another and be thankful in all circumstances. Just as Job never grumbled against God and was blessed by Him, we too must understand that all things are given and taken by God as all things belong to him.
