Let us love one another

1 John 4:7-11New International Version (NIV)
God’s Love and Ours
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Today is Valentine’s Day. Although there is no definitive background on the exact founding of this date, one of the stories is that it roots from Saint Valentine. At the time, Claudius II had outlawed marriage so that he could recruit men to go to war for him. However, Saint Valentine went against this law and continued to marry people who were in love. When it was discovered, he was martyred on 2/14. He was known for his letter of love and this has become a tradition.

Second story comes from a Japanese chocolate company that promoted sending of love letters as part of their marketing campaign and in 1960, a confectionary company used the theme, “taste love on Valentine’s Day” to promote the selling of chocolates and this tradition has spread to the world.

Third story is associated with the first and comes from the time of Rome. Valentine’s day was used to celebrate a Roman god during which time lovers would write their names on a piece of note paper and put it in a bottle and men would randomly select bottles to meet their matches.
During the middle ages, as the church expanded its influence, the name of this martyr was attached to the celebration of this date and most likely this is where the connection with the first story came to be.

As we live in the US, those who are in love give each other chocolates as a sign of their love.

What is authentic love?

What is the most important thing in this world? When asked this questions most people will say money and the reasoning behind this is that most people think that with money you can do anything you want in this world. However, in the bible, the most important thing in this world is love. Apostle John said, “My loving brothers and sisters, let us love one another as love is God and so anyone that loves will know God and those that do not love will not know God.”

The love that God shows to us

John 3:16 says, “for God so loved the world that he sent his one and only son, so that whosoever believes in him will not be condemned but he will be saved and will receive eternal life”. God sent his most important thing, which was his Son to this world so that he would take the sin of this world upon himself and save all sinners. For those who receive Jesus they will receive eternal life. Jesus Christ’s coming showed God’s most direct revelation and the beginning of the gospel for man. This incident allowed God, who is love, to show that love explicitly to us.

The great love of God became the basis for spiritual life

For whoever that loves has been born of God (v7). Those that live just for the flesh will end up facing death. However, those that believe in Christ will become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and will receive new life. That life will never end (john 11:25,26) and though it cannot be seen (Colossians 3:3,4) it is eternal. (1 John 2:17). This life through love allows us to evidence that we are God’s children.

         The implementation of love

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God” God’s love cannot just stop at hearing and knowing the word. That love must be implemented in your life. You must show that love to your neighbors and to God.
Jesus Christ showed his love by giving up his life without holding anything back and without hesitation. He lived the word which stated that to give up your life for your friend is the greatest example of love. (John 15:13)

How can we implement the love that God showed to us? (Luke 10:25-37)

Jesus said that we should love our God and our neighbors with all of our body, mind, soul and strength. He showed us that we can truly obtain life through this act.

         Who is our neighbor?

Jesus said that our neighbor was like the Samaritan. Why the person from Samaria? The person that was robbed and beaten represents the person that we are hesitant to meet today. Those that we fear will be a waste of our time, resources and will be a slight to our reputation. It can represent the many homeless that has arisen in the Los Angeles area. Why?

We can find the person from Samaria in the old testament. After King Solomon, Israel was divided into two regions: north was the region called Israel and Judea was the region in the south. There were 19 kings in the north kingdom that disobeyed God and so was left to be conquered by the Assyrians and thus became a country with people of mixed blood.
The South Judea, after the conquest by Babylon, God restored Jerusalem through King Cyrus. At that time, people of Samaria interfered with the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem and thus the construction was delayed for a long time. Through these actions, people of Samaria were despised by the Jews. If we look in John chapter 4, Jesus went to the well and asked the woman to give him some water and she was a Samaritan woman and she was surprised he had asked her for water. The reason for this shock was because of the relationship between Jews and Samaritans.

Jesus spoke about the neighbor that we need to help

Jesus spoke about the person who was attacked on his way to Jericho. This person was on the side of the road after being attacked and robbed and a high priest saw this person and avoided him. A levi just passed by also. However, the third person, a person from Samaria saw this person who had been robbed and felt compassion for him and so used his resources to treat him and put him upon his horse and took him to the closest rest stop and paid the person to take care of the beaten man.
The levite and the high priest did not touch the beaten person due to their beliefs. Their reasoning may have been correct according to their strict teachings but they cannot be considered a “neighbor”.
The beaten person has become a burden to the Samaritan but he didn’t consider this and instead only thought about how he could take care of and protect this beaten and robbed person. This Samaritan can be truly considered a neighbor and this is the person that Jesus was telling us to be like.

The Samaritan considered all life to be precious.

The Samaritan was a compassionate person

The Samaritan was willing to sacrifice himself and his resources

In order to love, we must train ourselves

The book “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus” states this:

Remember that men and women are different

. The type of love men want is that of acknowledgement, trust and giving thanks.
The type of love women want is sincere interest, understanding and respect.
In many cases, men ignore women’s feelings while pursuing a resolution.
Women try to give unnecessary advice and care.

Men relieve their stress by going away to some place quiet and contemplating about the problem.
Women resolve their problems by wanting to discuss the issues.

Men are moved when they feel they are needed and women are moved when they feel they are loved.

Men and women use different languages.
Men and women have different perspectives with regards to intimacy.
Men get close and then want to pull away.
Women try to latch onto men who want to pull away.

남자가 원하는 사랑은 주로 신뢰해 주고 인정해 주고 감사하는 사랑이다               type of love men look for
( 신뢰, 인정, 감사, 천미, 찬성, 격려) trust, acknowledgement, thanks, praise, encourage)
Type of love women look forinterest, understanding, respect, devotion, sympathy, conviction
Men act as if they are always right and thus end up ignoring women’s feelings and women end up unknowingly criticizing and condemning men’s actions when they are not pleased with something a man does.

Know the dissatisfaction of men and women

We must know why men try to always figure things out and why women always try to fix things.
Women feel that men do not lend their ears to what they have to say. Women feel that men just hear only a few words and then jump to conclusions.
Men complain that women always try to change and fix them. Every chance they get, women try to instruct men on what they need to do.

A conversation that makes you feel good
Don’t use the word “why” in conversation
Use the words “how” and “what” in conversation
How did you come to that thought?
What made you feel that way?

              Use the 1,2,3 conversation method

     1) say it once
     2) listen twice
     3) positively reinforce three times

Application

Love is not by words but to be shown with our entire body and mind.

2. Love one another,  Love one another, Love one another,  Jesus said.

God gave us the great command and that is to love God and our neighbors
with all of our body, mind and soul and strength.

Christ and Love must become our priority.
