7 Tips for Successful Seed Germination for the Home Vegetable Garden

paralytic-1140x1114.jpgFollow these steps to increase your germination rates and stronger seedlings for the garden.

The first step in making germination more successful is understanding the seeds' purpose and why they do what they do.

A seed is a self contained little miracle that carries inside it everything it requires to sprout and grow into the seedling. It's got a store of food as well as all the information it needs to grow, including knowing that the right conditions exist for it to sprout.

After the seed is created, it goes into dormancy. It's just sleeping, and breathing. Yes, it's breathing. It is breathing in oxygen and giving off carbon dioxide. The seeds in this state could endure for a long time and yet remain viable because it takes very little energy to stay in the dormant state. To ensure that seeds remain dormant and extend their viability, keep them in a cool , dry location out of direct sunlight.

1. Be consistent for consistent results.

If a seed is convinced that the right conditions exist for sprouting, it will begin to transform. This is when it becomes active and the germination process is initiated. Germination requires a constant ideal environment for a successful sprout.

Any interruption in this process could result in less the chances of success. Seeds have only so much energy stored and when you send it the signal to begin its journey, and switch off the signal then it won't have enough energy to restart the process. Drying out or exposure to extreme temperature fluctuations can make the germination cycle end in failure.

Be certain once you begin to germinate seeds, you maintain their moisture and temperature. Cool nights that are a natural element of the process to seeds that are outside is one thing, searing heator drought can end germination.

2. Use appropriate seed starting mix for best results.

Seeds don't require fertilizers or food sources to grow, and these nutrients could inadvertently feed bacteria algae, moss or other organisms. They will wait for your seed to sprout before eating your seed.

Preparing the Mix for Planting Your Seeds

Prepare your germinating mix using equal parts perlite and peat moss as well as a seed blend. Potting soil is a viable option in the absence of fertilized prior to use. A well-composting soil can also be used; be careful to stay clear of partially composted materials. Compost should be fine and crumble easily with no large pieces.

TIP: Use coir rather than peat in your sprouting mix; it is a natural coconut husk that holds water very well. Mix it in with perlite to avoid excessive saturation of the potting media. Be sure to buy the powder-based fine Coir and not the "chipped" coir which is not as fine and may contain chunks of fiber which could hinder the growth of seedlings.

3. Use clean containers with good Drainage Holes for Spouting your seeds

Reduce the risk of 'damping off' of young seedlings by making sure containers are clean. Clean containers reduce bacteria, molds, fungus and other potentially hostile organisms from forming and بذور ملوخية damaging the germinating seed.

Be sure that your container has adequate drainage through the creation of holes in on the sides of the vessel. Alternatively, you can make use of rolled newspaper or newsprint or peat pots that allow moisture to evaporate through their walls. This will also allow the mixing mix to draw in water through the sides and down the sides of the container.

4. Clean used containers with Hydrogen Peroxide and not Bleach.

Clean all containers that can be used for the sprouting of seeds using a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. The best method is to first wash the container with dishesoap and water, and then rinse with a bath of 3% h2o2 for ten to 15 minutes. This also comes with the advantage of not causing any harm to the plant that will grow in the future or you as the'residual by-product' of h2o2's production is oxygen; something that the seed needs in order to grow properly.

5. Soak or Pre-Sprout Seeds Before Planting To Improve Results and Reduce Germination Time.

Pre-soaking, or even pre-germinating seeds will greatly boost the rate of germination and cut down the time it takes to sprout seeds for the garden.

Using the Paper Towel Packet to Pre-germinate Your Seed:

Prepare an solution of.05 to 1.0 percent hydrogen peroxide in clean filtered or distilled water. Using ordinary paper towels lay flat and saturate the paper towels with solution.

Spread the seeds you would like to germinate in the center of the paper towel in one single layer.

Fold in both sides of your towel, until you've made small pieces roughly one-quarter in size. It's the same as the paper towel.

Set the package with the extra toweling on top in a clean dish in a mildly hot (65 to 75 degree) area that is not in direct sunlight or air flow.

Place the dish somewhere where you will not be able to forget to keep it wet.

Note: Seeds do not need light to germinate (except for lettuce ). However, lettuce is usually sown directly into the garden or the final growing location and is best sprinkled on top of the soil, and is not even over.). The other seeds that germinate can be put in a cabinet or shelves that do not have extreme temperature swings or direct sunlight which will cause drying out of the paper towel.

You can actually save the seed in the paper towel container until it begins to sprout, but be sure that you moisten it by spraying it with a few drops from the remedy at least once a day or more frequently in drier conditions.

Be aware that if you are planting seeds indoors in winter in a heated house you must pay careful attention, since the paper towel will dry faster.

Some people prefer covering the seed packets with plastic wrap, should you choose to do this make sure you don't pack the seeds tightly - leave gaps for air to flow through and out of the edges. Seeds will sprout faster and you won't risk them staying too wet; be aware that they're still breathing air in this process.

Using the Soaking Method to Jump Start Germination:

Alternatively, you can soak the seeds in small portions of water solution overnight. Simply fill an empty dish and then place the seeds in the solution. Soak them for 8 to 24 hours before planting to reap the most benefits...

If you just soak the seeds or place them in the paper towel, you are able to plant them at any time after the first eight hours in the soaking or 24 hours in the paper towel.

Using the paper towel method, you can actually wait until they have sprouted and then plant them, to jump-start the whole process.

Watch closely for the very first sprout of your new plant emerge. Once the tiny spur is visible, you can place the seed germinating in soil. This could save you a couple of weeks in germination time.

6. Make sure that your container is properly prepared with Planting Mix

The containers should be filled loosely, then shake lightly to allow the mix to settle. Placing the container on the counter or table helps to fill the container but without compressing it to excessively.

Make use of the edge of a sharp knife or trowel to scrape the top of the container and create a level, even surface. Do not tamp down or overfill and compress the mix before planting the seed. Keep in mind that the seed requires air spaces in the soil to breathe.

If you are planting seeds that have not been spotted or early sprouts, create small holes in the container with your fingers or lay the seed lightly on top of the soil and then cover with a loose layer and then gently tap over the seeds.

Most seed needs to be planted to the depth of 2 or three times the size of its own diameter. A pea, for example that measures 1/4 inch in diameter, needs to be planted half to 1/4 inch in depth within the soil. Seeds smaller than that can be scattered on the soil surface. Cover the smaller seeds with the mix in a thin layer and tamp gently using the flat of your hand.

Keep the soil moist (not damp) and place the container in a loose fitting plastic that will keep moisture in the soil. The most effective way to ensure the same level of moisture in seeds is to water from the base. Set the containers in a tray that is shallow water filled approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep with pure water. It will attract the water up to the container, and you do not need to be concerned about washing the seed out by over watering.

Vegetable produce bags purchased from the supermarket work great because they are slim and open to one of the ends. Place the container inside the bag and then flip it upside down.

When the sprouts have popped up from the ground, you need to remove the plastic covering. Begin to watch for the initial two leaves to appear in the signal that it's time to give your new sprout a little compost tea or dilute liquid plant food.

Take care to not overfeed or burn it. Remember that it is still a baby. Just as you wouldn't' give a newborn steak, you shouldn't feed your baby plant an adult size plant meal or it will very likely die from the shock.

7. Give Seedlings Stimulation and sufficient light to ensure strong stems and healthy plants

If you're growing seeds in your home or in a greenhouse, they'll need some kind of stimulation to build strong stems. It is possible to achieve this by installing a small fan to blow air around them or gently brushing them with your hand every day for a couple of minutes. This will help prevent the seedlings from becoming fragile and 'leggy'.

Now that they have been growing, they will require good lighting. A sunny window sill on the south-facing side of the house or a sunny outdoor spot during the day will work well. It is important to bring seeds inside at night, if it is still before your last frost date or the nights are still cold. When you gradually introduce the seedlings to the cooler outdoor temperatures over a series of days, they'll be prepared to enter the garden.

Vegetables with larger seeds, peas, beans and squash melons, peppersand tomatoes, and eggplants are all very easy to grow using this method, and can be sown directly into the garden after sprouting. For this, mix the 2 to 3 inch round of good soil for potting or seed starting mix and place the seeds that have sprouted into the center inside the. Then prepare your spot in the garden. Then, place the soil ball and the seeds that have been spewed into the garden and gently cover it with soil.

Tip: If you are planting corn, squash beans, peas, beans or any other seeds that are large such as this, you may want to lay a cover of shade cloth, plastic or net over the seeded area to prevent birds from stealing the seeds you have planted.

Birds are extremely clever and will happily spend a early morning watching your plant seeds, and then spend the afternoon eating the seeds straight out of the garden! This is particularly true for blue jays.

Smaller seeded vegetables, such as celery, carrots and other herbs can be a bit difficult to handle and difficult to see and work with however the rewards are often just as significant, if not more so. Many of these seeds take longer to sprout and this method can reduce that time by 2 to 3 weeks.

Don't forget that the new seedlings need the same amount of consistency to thrive like they did when they germination. Make sure that seedlings are protected from strong winds, extreme temperature changes. Provide adequate light without letting them get too dry or hot.

Once your seedlings have developed their first true leaves, that is, the leaves that are recognizable as those of the plant, not the seedsling starter leaves, they are able to begin to be ready to be planted in the garden. Always allow young seedlings to have several days outdoors exposure and then bring them back to the indoors at night before planting them out into the garden. This allows them to adapt to the changing environment before they are transplanted.

After the plants are hardened off, put them in the garden in cool mornings on a cloudy day to get the best results. Hot sunny weather can cause transplants to be difficult in the first day; therefore, if it is hot and sunny consider moving the plants in the evening so that the new plants have time to adjust before being exposed to intense sun.

There's never been better time to grow your own vegetables. New innovations in gardening have made it easier than ever to grow your own organic, healthy food at your home. In a world where there is no way to label GMOs, it is an advantage to know what exactly is in the food we eat and cultivating your own food in your vegetable garden gives you the freedom to eat what you want.
